I am not a religious person, and therefore, I don't believe that our lives were pre-determined for us. That we already have a fate that we cannot escape. What I do believe, is that our life is not purely governed by fate or choice, but that fate and choice are both present in our lives. For example, everyone has heard of the stories in which someone was born into a life of poverty but worked hard in order to pull themselves out and succeed. This is an example of someone overriding their fate by making the right choices. It could have been their fate to stay in the life of poverty, but because they chose to work hard and succeed over accepting the fact they couldn't pull themselves out of poverty, they were able to "change" their fate.
Oedipus never had a choice in his fate. When Oedipus is told he would become the murderer of his father, and would marry his mother, he tries to escape this by running away from his home and "parents". However, Oedipus unknowingly fulfills his curse when he unknowingly murders his father, King Laius, and when he later marries his mother and produces children with her. While Oedipus was able to make choices to try and escape his fate, they were fruitless.
