Blog #4 - Revenge/Medea

From personal experience, I do not condone or believe in revenge. As defined by the dictionary, revenge is the action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands. Under any circumstance, I don't believe that "inflicting hurt" on someone is the right way to go. I have personally been the victim of revenge, and for both parties, it usually does not result in a positive way. Whenever I feel someone has wronged me, rather than intentionally trying to hurt them, I definitely think being the better person and being nice to the person in the best way to go. Being kind to someone is beneficial. Revenge is not. I can't see in any way shape or form intentionally trying to hurt another person can be a benefit. Think about it, ten years down the road are you really going to care that 'little sally' purposely wore the same dress as you to homecoming?

In Eurpidies' Medea, Medea takes revenge on Jason by killing her two children. Do I think that this is right? As stated before, definitely not. Medea took personal revenge by killing her two children, an act which most mothers cannot even begin to fathom. From personal experience, I know that any act of revenge only ends badly for the person who committed the act. Medea should not have killed her two children, but did she? Yes. Her love was a curse great enough to drive her to madness.
