Werther was an emotional man of an extremely heighten sensitivity. His ultimate demise resulted from both his unlimited reserve of passion and his ability to over-examine all of his exchanges and observations. His continued fixation with Lotte (even after he almost immediately learned of her marriage to be) was remarkably similar to an addiction. His obsessive infatuation with Charlotte further worsened his unhealthily meticulous nature and led him to a depression far beyond the power of the most potent medication. Werther irrationally pursued a love that he rationally understood could not be returned. Werther imposed suffering most willingly to himself and fed his addiction by becoming closer to Charlotte until his misery ultimately pushed him to suicide. His mental illness overtook his ability to reason and guided him to the most destructive state of mind.
To help Werther, I would have urged him to find another outlet for his irrepressible passions away from Lotte. I would have insisted first that Werther leave Wahlheim permanently to remove himself from the addicting presence of Lotte. I believe that Werther was on the road to a slow recovery during his leave for the job in Weimar until he returned to Wahlheim after his resignation. I next would have pushed Werther to obtain a concrete, stable job or another passion to consume his thoughts. I can only guess if such advice could have saved a doomed man.
