Ah, I remember Werther. Such a delightful young man. At the start, his case wasn't too severe- innocent obsession over a young girl, Charlotte, similar to a crush. He enjoyed her presence and their conversations. It was only later that Werther began to show signs of an unhealthy obsession towards Lotte. Werther became unable to not think about her and only when he visit Lotte did his heart seem at rest. This is most evident when he learns of her engagement and does not cease to visit and converse with her. As many people know, attempting to become close with an engaged woman, does not bode well for either parties. Lotte knew of this and attempted to take steps to close off this "friendly" relationship as she believed that it was. Werther, unable to accept this, continually tried to become closer to Lotte, even coming down to her house when she told him he could not visit anymore. It was this almost crazed infatuation that led to Werther's downfall, and ended with his suicide.
If I could have helped Werther, I would have forced him to leave his current residence and find a home someplace far from Lotte. Then I would urge him to either find a stable job or to find some outlet for his passions or something to take his mind off of Lotte. In a sense, keep his mind busy so it doesn't have time to think about Lotte. When Werther quit his job, he had nothing to think about but Lotte, which led to his obsessive thoughts and feelings towards her.
